History of Department The roots of the Wisconsin office of County Clerk go back to the 14th century England where the office gradually developed into an office recognizable as similar to our own. Election of county clerks in Wisconsin began in 1849 with the offices being constitutionally mandated. Terms of office are four years.
Mission Statement / Departmental Purpose The County Clerk's office is the official record keeper for the County Board, is responsible for providing public notice of county activities and meetings, is involved with property tax administration and county financial records, administers elections, and is the local outlet for several state functions such as marriage and dog licenses.

Education and Training Required of Employees County Clerk: Elected Official. Staff: Entry level and specialized clerical support with knowledge of electoral system, tax deed process including real property terms and descriptions, and bookkeeping.
