Winter Driving Advice from Highway Commissioner

Memo from Jon Johnson, Eau Claire County Highway Commissioner

With winter upon us, The Eau Claire County Highway Department has received many reports of snow plowing across various roads and highways in the county. According to 86.01 it is illegal to place material, such as snow, in the travel way of any road or highway. This activity may also cause an accident to happen. Please consider this as you remove the snow from your driveway this winter.

Also, the traveling public is reminded to exercise caution and drive with care. Clearing a small patch to see through a windshield or rear window is not sufficient. In winter weather, the driving hazard that’s even worse than snow and ice is your inability to see what’s ahead. To help with visibility remember to clear snow and ice from the surface of your vehicle. Be careful and go slow. Use courtesy and common sense. It’s also very important Not to Crowd the Plow. Pass plows with extreme caution and never drive into a snow plow’s cloud. Remember, in bad weather, if you’re out there, so is your County Highway Department.
