When do I need an electrical permit? 

For new or rewired electrical services on the following:

  • 1 & 2 family dwellings or on 1 & 2 family accessory structures (detached garages, sheds, free standing services on vacant land, etc.);
  • commercial structures, commercial accessory structures, or commercial property;
  • agricultural structures or agricultural property. 

For any additions or alterations (such as adding a circuit, replacing a circuit, extending a circuit, adding or replacing a sub-panel, etc.) to the following:

  • existing residential electrical systems in 1 & 2 family dwellings, in 1 & 2 family accessory structures, or on residential property;
  • any existing commercial structures, in commercial accessory structures, or on commercial property;
  • an existing agricultural electrical system in agricultural structures or on agricultural property.

Adding a photovoltaic system (solar), wind generating system, etc. to an existing residential, commercial, or agricultural system.


What information do I need to provide for an electrical permit?

For a residential electrical permit: 

  • Residential Electrical Permit Application: Printable / Fillable 
  • Check the appropriate box for an electrical permit in the "Permit Requested" line.
  • Owners Name, Mailing Address, Telephone & Email
  • Electrical Contractor, License #, Expiration Date, Mailing Address, Telephone & Email
  • Master Electrician, License #, Expiration Date, Mailing Address, Telephone & Email

*Please note Electrical Contractor and Master Electrician licenses are not the same number.*

In the Project Location Box:

  • Fill in the Building Address
  • Box 1. PROJECT - check applicable box
  • Box 3 OCCUPANCY - check occupancy type
  • Box 6 ELECTRIC - fill in Service Amps and check whether underground or overhead
  • Box 14 ESTIMATED BUILDING COST - Fill in Estimated Cost of electrical work
  • Applicant must sign and date the application.
  • If a homeowner is the applicant they must read and sign the Cautionary Statement to Owners.

For a commercial/agricultural electrical permit:

  • Commercial/Agricultural Electrical Permit Application: Printable / Fillable 
  • Owners Name, Mailing Address, Telephone & Email
  • Electrical Contractor, License #, Expiration Date, Mailing Address, Telephone & Email
  • Master Electrician, License #, Expiration Date, Mailing Address, Telephone & Email

*Please note Electrical Contractor and Master Electrician licenses are not the same number.*

  • Tenant Name, Mailing Address, Telephone & Email (if applicable)
  • Fill in Project/Site Name and Site Address
  • Fill in Electrical Service information
  • Fill in Cost of Project
  • Fill in Type of Construction
  • Fill in Occupancy Type and Additional Non-Accessory Occupancies
  • Sign and Date Application

For additions or alterations to an existing system:

Provide a written description of work to be done or a small plan showing work to be done.

For photovoltaic systems:

Provide schematic of work to be done along with information on equipment to be used.
